Wife In Labour, Or Royal Flush?
I saw your contest here for the best poker story.
I'm not sure if my story is the best, but it's good one to tell.
My wife was two days past her delivery date with our first child,
but the doctors said everything was okay and that baby was not coming
for a couple of days. Her mother came down earlier that day and
the two were just relaxing and my wife said she did not care if
I went and played some poker at my buddies down the street. So I
left the house, armed with a fully charged cell phone.
The cards I was getting during that game were
crazy. I can not think of a night that I had better cards. In my
very first hand I had pocket aces and for some reason everyone at
the table wanted to bet, looking back on it I don't think I did
anything but call people. After a few hands there were some people
knocked out of the game and I has looking at a towering chip stack
in front of me, the night could not get better, or could it?
After a couple more hands I was dealt a ten and
Ace of Hearts. I thought that it was a good hand, but there were a
lot hands out there that could beat me. The first flop revealed a poker
player's utopian flop of King of Hearts, Jack of Hearts and another card
that I really don't remember. I was sitting in my chair in total disbelieve
of the possibility I was looking at.
It was at that point that my phone started to
ring. People I tell this story to don't believe me, but it was my
mother-in-law calling to say that my wife was in labor and that
they were going to the hospital. The news was exciting and I swear
that I forgot about my hand for a moment, but after I ended the
call I remembered. Would it hurt to finish the hand, I mean this
was a once in a life time thing that could unfold.
This next card was another card that I forgot,
I know that it did nothing for me. At this point the betting started
to increase, someone must have caught a high pair or something.
It was at that point I saw the missing card, my friend flipped over
a Queen of Hearts on the river. I now had a Royal Flush, I could
not believe it. I quickly called an all-in bet. This was probably
the greatest night of my life, obviously the birth of my first born
was the highlight, but a Royal Flush did not hurt.
My friends framed the cards for me as a present and it now
hangs on the wall in my home office. Anyways I thought that I would share my
story with you.
